Patrick Leigh Fermor (1915 - 2011), scriitor și aventurier legendar din Marea Britanie, a călătorit între 1933-1934, pe jos, din Olanda până la Constantinopol. În urma acestei expediții a scris mai târziu două cărți de referință: „A Time of Gifts” - 1977 - în care se relatează parcurgerea teritoriului dintre Olanda și Slovacia - și „Between the Woods and the Water”- 1986 - în care este descrisă trecerea prin Ungaria și România. 

„Between the Woods and the Water”, din nefericire netradusă încă în română, a fost, pentru noi, o lectură deosebită, ajutându-ne să descoperim o imagine a vieții cotidiene din unele dintre ansamblurile pe care le studiem. Patrick a făcut această călătorie când era încă foarte tânăr, deschis către toate experiențele noi pe care aceste locuri i le ofereau. Astfel s-a împrietenit atât cu aristocrati cât și cu oameni simpli, observând un mod de viață azi dispărut. Parcurgând valea Mureșului, în zona Banat-Crișana, a fost găzduit la palatul Solymossy din Mocrea - Ineu, în Arad, la mănăstirea Maria Radna, la palatul Konopi din Odvoș, la Căpâlnaș - de unde a vizitat împreuna cu gazdele lui, conții Teleki, palatul de la Bulci și castelul Huniazilor din Hunedoara - apoi la Zam și Gurasada - unde s-a împrietenit cu Istvan (Elemer von K) și Angela, cu care a călătorit apoi prin Transilvania. 

Cartea nu este un simplu jurnal de călătorie, fiind scrisă de Patrick la maturitate, la câteva decenii după călătoria propriu zisă. Cartea oferă, alături de poveștile de pe drum, și pasaje în care analizează istoria acestor zone și a populației care trăiește aici, într-un mod foarte obiectiv. Recomandăm lectura tuturor pasionatilor de istorie și nu numai, sperând ca pe viitor să găsim în librării versiunea în română. 

„After the Woods and the Water” este proiectul lui Nick Hunt, un scriitor și jurnalist britanic, prin care reface traseul lui Patrick Leigh Fermor, la 80 de ani după acesta, încercând să documenteze, într-un stil foarte personal, schimbările pe care aceste teritorii vaste le-au suferit. Am descoperit inițiativa lui din întâmplare, pe blogul lui Tom Sawford, un mare admirator al lui Paddy. L-am contactat, oferindu-i ajutor în identificarea unora dintre reședințele menționate în carte, iar răspunsul lui a fost pozitiv. Acum două săptămâni l-am întâlnit pe valea Mureșului, în încercarea de a-i explica istoriile din spatele transformărilor dramatice pe care aceste locuri le-au suferit.

Împreună am vizitat cetatea Șoimoș, palatul de la Odvoș si biserica părăsită, ansamblul Mocioni de la Bulci, iar a doua zi ne-am stabilit la Căpâlnaș. De acolo am insistat să facem o vizită și la castelul Huniazilor din Hunedoara, ținand cont de cât de frumos și interesant este peisajul în țara Hațegului.

Abia după ce l-am cunoscut și i-am citit postările, am realizat complexitatea călătoriei sale. Nick preferă mersul pe jos, în încercarea de a relaționa și de a cunoaște astfel teritoriul. Luând lucrurile în ritmul în care i se prezintă, gradual, el observă schimbările din peisaj, anotimpuri, oameni și evenimente din locurile parcurse, și felul în care acestea îl afectează, atât la nivel fizic cât și mental. Având cu el cărțile lui Paddy, le folosește pentru a se ghida, fără a imita comportamentul sau descrierile de acolo, ci încercând să își formeze propriile păreri în raport cu peisajul și locul în care se află, notându-și constant orice detaliu ce îi atrage atenția.

În urma acestei călătorii Nick urmează să scoată o carte la sfârșitul acestui an sau la începutul lui 2013. Până atunci îi puteți urmări parcursul pe blogul său. Tot aici gasiți și traseul pe care și l-a stabilit. Din ultimele postări se pare că îi place țara noastră. Daca se întâmplă să vă aflați în calea lui, vă recomandăm îi acordați puțină atenție și să îi povestiți lucruri interesante pe care le știți despre aceste locuri, și poate prin asta reușiti să le redescoperiți farmecul.

Between 1933 and 1934, Patrick Leigh Fermor (1915 - 2011), a British writer and legendary adventurer then aged 18, set off on foot to travel from Holland to Istanbul/Constantinopole. Two great books resulted from this journey: A Time of Gifts, documenting the part from Holland to Slovakia, and Between the Woods and the Water narrating the voyage through Hungary and Romania.

Between the Woods and the Water, not yet translated into Romanian, was, for us, a particularly interesting read as it talks about some of the mansions we study and what everyday life was like during those peaceful times. Patrick made this trip when he was still very young and open to the variety of experiences every new place had to offer, leading him to make friends with both aristocrats and peasants alike. He took his time in every new place he was welcomed to observe and understand a way of life that has now almost disappeared. On his way through Banat he stayed on the estates of Ineu, in Radna monastery, in Odvoș, Căpâlnaș and Gurasada, and visited Bulci and Zam, before setting out into Transilvania, together with two companions – Istvan / Elemer von K and Angela.

What makes the writing all the more fascinating is that this is not just a simple travel diary. Patrick Leigh Fermor wrote the book in his adult years, and, together with stories about life on the road and the places he stayed at, he incorporated passages that analyze the history of people and places in a mature and objective way. We highly recommend Between the Woods and the Water, hoping there will be a good Romanian translation in the near future - it really is much needed.

"After the Woods and the Water" is a project by Nick Hunt, a British writer, journalist, walker and future legend. Nick set out in Patrick’s footsteps 80 years later, documenting and filtering the changes that this vast territory had suffered through his own perception. We discovered this endeavour by chance, through Tom Sawford's blog, and, being fans of the book, we've contacted him to try to help him identify some of the places mentioned. His response was positive, and 2 weeks ago I met him in the Mures Valley, wanting to explain the stories behind some of the places on his route, and, hopefully, help him understand the dramatic transformations that happened there. Together, we visited Soimos citadel, Odvos mansionwith its deserted Church, Bulci and on the second day we set up base at Căpâlnaș (see photos above). From there, I insisted on taking a trip to Hunedoara castle, staying true to the book.

 

 

Getting to know him and reading his posts, I have understood how complex his journey really is. Restricting himself to walking, he develops a relationship with the territory, a relationship that, today, most people have lost. Taking everything as it presents itself, gradually, at a slow pace, he observes the changes in landscape, seasons, people, events, and how they affect him both physically and emotionally. Constantly taking notes, with a keen sense of observation, he keeps Patrick Leigh Fermor's books as a guide. He approaches things differently, without attempting to imitate behaviors from the book, preffering to experience the landscape in his own personal way. He is able to perceive the cities and villages he passes through on a proper human scale,as it was naturally intended, and not in the fast forward version we have become used to.

Nick says there will be a book coming out from this journey towards the end of this year or the beginning of 2013. He seems to like our country, as you can see from his latest post. So, should you ever meet him, we encourage you to take the time to introduce him to the simple things you like or tell him stories you know about the place you live. Through his eyes, perhaps you will rediscover how very special they really are.
